Vitamin K2 is a supplement that’s getting more and more attention, and with good reason. It performs a very important function in your body and is critical for good healthy bones and teeth.

This Vitamin has been recognized for years, but its contribution to a healthy body has only gotten credit in the last few years.

There are several types of vitamin K, and it’s essential to make the distinctions. Vitamin K is not the same as K2, and to be more confusing, there are several forms of K2. If you looked at the link in the previous sentence, you will see three types of vitamin k.

In this post, we will only look a vitamin K2, or menaquinone -7, MK-7 for short. In further reading, the terms vitamin K2 and MK-7 will be considered the same and used interchangeably.

Vitamin K2 and D3 Discussion:

These two partners have a lot to say about calcium and what happens to it in our bodies. D3 pulls calcium from the foods you consume and turns it loose in your bloodstream. Vitamin K2 tells the calcium where to go and where not to go.

Yes, it’s a little more complicated, but this explanation will suffice for most of us. If you want more, here’s a useful link that goes into great depth on the K vitamins – they do a lot for our health.

Today though, we’re going to stick to bones, teeth, and arterial plaques – in that order. Before we start, however, here’s a very readable and useful article about Vitamin K2.

Strong Bones:

Vitamin K2 and D3 are the subjects of this illustration. These two vitamins work together to put calcium where it belongs and keep it away from where it doesn't.

Bones need calcium along with other minerals to develop correctly. Bones are constantly rebuilt by breaking down old bone structures and building new ones. This requires a constant supply of calcium.

Calcium comes into your body in the form of food and drink or possibly as a supplement.

Vitamin D3 makes this calcium available in your blood. While in your blood, MK-7 hooks onto it, packages it, and carries it into your bones for new bone construction.

As you can see, vitamin K2 does a critical job of getting calcium on the construction site and making it ready to use.

Were this not the case, calcium would wander around your body, lingering in your blood and looking for a place to “stick.” You don’t want this to happen. Calcium buildup in the wrong places can be harmful and, in some cases, extremely dangerous.

We’ll talk about that later.

Strong Teeth:

In many ways, your teeth are like your bones. Healthy teeth are constantly rebuilding.

Vitamins D3 and K2 play the same roles in your teeth and bones. Without this constant calcium replacement, your teeth will weaken from the inside out, and you could lose them.

Here’s a word about the bones your teeth are anchored in. Like all the other bones in your body, your skull and jaw need the same rebuilding process that keeps bones strong and healthy.

MK-7 and D3 are essential in healthy teeth. teeth are meant to last a lifetime. Once they’re gone, that’s it.

Arterial Plaques:

Arterial plaques are made of fats and calcium, plus some other things like fibrin, for example, which holds them together.

The buildup of plaques on artery walls is a complex process about which there is much debate. There is no debate, however, about calcium playing a part in the process.

OK, arterial walls are one of those places where you don’t want calcium. Calcium deposits make plaques hard and stiff. Thus the term “hardening of the arteries.” This is something you definitely don’t want.

And guess what. MK-7 does its job here by preventing calcium deposits in the arteries.

Three Reasons You need MK-7:

  1. Strong Bones. Read this and go deep into K2 and osteoporosis.
  2. Strong Teeth. This is a fascinating article about dental health and D3 and K2.
  3. Soften Arterial Plaques: There is good evidence that you can reduce plaque buildup with K2.

If you read my simple descriptions of what K2 (MK-&) does for you and looked at the links I offered, It’s not hard to say that you should be taking MK-7.

If you are following my supplementing advice here, then you are already taking D3 and MK-7. You can stop reading here.

But if Not, Here’s Help:

You can combine D3 and K2 supplements in one capsule a day here. This is what I take myself.

If, after reading the above links, you want to try protecting yourself from osteoporosis and plaque buildup, here’s an advanced form of K2 you can add. You should add this supplement along with the above product because it will need the D3 from the combination product. Think of Mega K2 as a potential bone-building, plaque-reducing booster. My wife uses this product.
