100 pull-ups for a birthday present?
100 pull-ups in one hour. That was my birthday present to myself. I did them and now have a certificate from the gym’s owner to verify my accomplishment.
Here’s my certificate of accomplishment signed by the owner of my gym, Ultra Fit Gym and Fitness Center of Lufkin, Texas.
See them on Facebook here.
Ultra Fit is an Old School gym with lots of space and members.
I will post my workout schedule below.
OK, So why am I telling you this?
Not to brag or show off. This is not about me. Instead, it’s about you. To show you what can be done by a senior person willing to “work at it.”
I am not a former star athlete, not a physically gifted person, nor am I a genetic freak. I am, in fact, a very ordinary person who did an extraordinary thing.
You can too. Maybe not 100 pull-ups, but you can do many other things that are just as extraordinary. Keep that in mind as I finish my story. Once finished, I want to start talking about you.
Please stay with me.
My Gym Routine.
Wednesday:
Balance exercises. One Foot, and Sattelite.
Leg and Hip, Pushups, and abs.
Saturday:
Super-Slow Big Five:
Pull-up, Chest Press, Dumbell Raise, Row, and Leg Press.
This is it. I don’t do complex or technically difficult exercises. I go to the gym twice a week, and added together; these visits take bout an hour and a half.
I do not “live” in the gym, and I do not recommend that others do either.
This is my gym-friend Lacy presenting me with my 100 Pull-Up award plack. Lacy is a competitive female bodybuilder and has several awards. I won’t mention her age, but if I did, you’d really be surprised.
OK, So Now, How About you?
I did these 100 pull-ups to prove a point to myself. Getting old does not mean getting weak. It is a fact that anyone at any age can get stronger. There is no doubt about this; it has been proven over and over, even in 100-year-old and plus people.
As an OMY, you are working with your doctor. Find out what your exercise limitations are – if any. I am confident that most of you will be able to do some resistance exercises (and balancing exercises).
Understand your limits and work within them.
Challenge Yourself:
Most of you are over 40, and many of you are now involved in a resistance exercise program or have and use a gym membership. My purpose is to get you started and keep you going in the right direction – getting stronger in your OMYzone.
The hardest part is getting started…
I didn’t wake up this way. I got this way by following my own advice, which you get free on this blog. I started working on my 100 Pull-up goal six months before my birthday. The Month before my birthday, I was doing 100 Pull-ups plus an extra 50 every Saturday to ensure that doing 100 would be easy on my birthday.
Yes, a 77-year-old man in training. I consider myself an elder athlete. And here’s the point I want to make; I’m no different than you. I know many of you might be physically compromised. Still, almost without exception, I’m convinced that most of you can set a tough goal that you systematically go after, just like you’re training for the Olympics.
So How About It?
Here’s a suggestion for a challenge most of you can take. Stand balanced on one foot at a time for one minute each. Work on these two days a week, so you can do them without grabbing a support bar. Once you can balance for one minute on each foot, you’re doing well and have the basics down. So what the heck, set an outrageous goal, say ten minutes on each foot. You’ll have to work hard to do this – very hard, but you have the rest of your life to do this – no time limits.
But here’s the good news: because balance involves so many muscles, you will get stronger just by working on balance.
Challenge yourself to do something amazing:
Never think you’re too old to achieve something remarkable. When I told my gym owner my plan, he laughed at me. And at the time I told him, I thought it was crazy myself.
Even so, I made a plan and worked at it. One pull-up at a time. Like walking a hundred miles starting with one step at a time. I am not a special person, and I certainly am not a physically gifted one, yet I did something remarkable.
So can you. Your goal is to live in your ONYzone long enough to take advantage of life-extending technology. It’s coming your way. Think big and go out to greet it.
